How to care for your suit

You’ve finally taken the plunge and purchased your first custom-made suit. Now that you’ve made the investment, you’ll want to learn how to care for your suit properly. Follow these tips and you’re guaranteed to keep your suit looking like new.

5 Tips for how to care for your suit to keep it looking like new

SIDE OUT AND ROTATE
Think of your closet as a volleyball court. Each person serves then rotates to a different position. So should your suit. Resist the urge to wear the same suit most of the time. We know its custom, fits perfectly and is the most comfortable item you own but even favorites need a break once in awhile.

LESS IS MORE
Plan to have your suit dry cleaned approximately three times a year or only when absolutely necessary—that means when it’s soiled or is starting to smell. Subjecting fine materials to harsh chemicals too often will shorten the life of your suit.

AGED TO PERFECTION
We all worry about wrinkles but at least, when it comes to clothing, they can easily be removed. Have suits and slacks only pressed, not cleaned. You’ll save wear and tear as well as some cash at the same time.

SALON TREATMENT
Groom your suit as you would yourself. You comb your hair to keep it looking good. Do the same for your clothing! Removing lint and Fido’s hair with a quality clothing brush will spruce it up without the cost of having it cleaned.

HANG UPS
Dry cleaners seem to have a monopoly on plastic bags but use that to your advantage. Remove the bag to allow your suit to “breathe” but don’t throw it away! Save it for traveling. After folding your suit, wrap it in plastic to avoid wrinkles. Once you’ve reached your destination, remove it from the bag and hang it up. Hopefully curved wooden hangers will be provided to keep the shape of the garment’s shoulders.
