If you’re going to rock a custom suit, make sure to follow the suit button rules. There is a right way and a wrong way to button a blazer or suit coat. If you don’t know when to button up or leave it open, you are advertising that you don’t know how to wear a suit.

So what is the protocol for buttoning a suit coat? Here are the key guidelines to follow.

5 Suit Button Rules

1. The bottom button: No matter how many buttons a suit coat or blazer has, the bottom one should never be buttoned. It would be too constricting, stretch the suit fabric and make sitting uncomfortable. It’s also a dead giveaway that a guy doesn’t know how to properly wear a suit.

2. One-Button Suits and Blazers: You’ve only one button to worry about so this one is a no-brainer. Unbutton it when you are seated and button up when you are standing.

3. Two-button Suits and Blazers: Stick to the top. Don’t button both buttons, only fasten the top.

4. Three-button Suits and Blazers: The middle button should always be buttoned up. You can fasten the top button as well, but never all three!

5. Double Breasted Suits: Whether standing or sitting down, double breasted jackets should be buttoned up, except for the bottom of course. That rule still stands!
